How To Cut Down Energy Costs Using Solar Hot Tub Covers

By Charles Snyder

There are various ways people are using to reduce their energy costs as well as the effects of pollution on our environment. Some people have gone as far as cutting down on basic necessities such as lighting, heating and even driving as a way to reduce their energy costs. For most hot tub owners they can reduce their energy costs by simply using solar hot tub covers. Hot tubs are mainly for comfort but they end up using a lot of energy.

A solar hot tub cover is a practical, affordable and very effective way of heating a tub. The covers are easily accessible in the market and one can easily install it on his or her self. They are quite inexpensive and end up saving us a lot in terms of reduced energy bills.

It is a known fact that hot tub heaters use a lot of energy to heat up the hot tub. After it is heated, the hot tub tends to lose a lot of heat at the open top mainly due to the wind. Hence using an insulating cover can help save you a lot on energy costs and also keep it clean from leaves blown by the wind.

The solar cover works by absorbing the heat from the sun and transferring it to the water. The water in the hot tub is usually transparent. This means that the sunlight just passes through with very little heat getting in the water.

The cover attracts the heat from the sunlight and transfers it to the water. Once the water is heated up, the heat is then retained by the help of the cover. Very little water is lost through evaporation. The cover is most effective at night where it stops most of the heat from escaping and therefore less energy is needed to heat the water.

Most hot tub covers are black in color as black is very good in absorbing heat than other colors. However, there are clear plastic covers in the market that also work perfectly. These are made from a special material that absorbs and stores heat and then transfers it to the water. It can also insulate the heat in the water and reduce evaporation of the hot water.

To keep your cover working for longer and effectively it is best to use it when the hot tub is not in use. You may find that you do not need to use the cover during the hot season but you need it more during the cold season. You should keep it stored away during the hot season to avoid it cracking, crumbling or even fraying. You should also be careful when it is being used. It is very easy for a child or person to get wrapped in it.

Whichever type of cover you choose for your hot tub, ensure it seals tightly at the top. You should also look into how well insulated your tub is to make sure that it does not lose heat the bottom or all the way around. The cover will only help you at the top.
